Who are Young Leaders?

Young Leaders are Explorer Scouts who have chosen to continue Scouting in a leadership capacity, usually to help with the Beaver Scout Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop of their Group.

Young LeaderIn general, Young Leaders help adult Leaders with the management of the Colony, Pack or Troop. Their responsibilities are agreed jointly with the adult Leaders. For example, they may take responsibility for certain events or activities.

The Young Leader Scheme  is a personal development programme that has a clear structure. For example, a Young Leader could help with a Cub Scout Pack for a number of months. They could also continue to take part in the Explorer Scout programme at District level. At the same time, they could be completing their Challenges and the Queen’s Scout Award and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

The key objectives of the scheme are to provide opportunities for the Explorer Scout to develop relationship skills and gain confidence,  while working in a valid role in a leadership team. In doing so, they can develop a portfolio, which can be linked to their education and work.
